Impact-rated and wind-rated garage doors for a coast that has been hit from Hutchinson Island twice in a month
The garage door is the largest and weakest opening in the house. When it blows in, the wind pressurizes the rooms behind it and lifts the roof. A door rated and braced for the pressures at your address is the single structural upgrade that does the most, and on the Treasure Coast it comes with a grant and an insurance credit.
Two ratings matter and they are not the same thing. A wind-rated door is engineered and tested, usually to ANSI/DASMA 108 or ASTM E330, to hold against a stated positive and negative pressure in pounds per square foot without failing; the pressures for your opening come from the 2023 Florida Building Code tables and the exposure of your lot, and the installer works them out before ordering. An impact-rated door goes further: its skins, struts and glazing have also passed a large-missile test for windborne debris, the two-by-four fired from a cannon, which is what the code requires in the windborne-debris regions that cover the coastal parts of St. Lucie and Martin counties. Both kinds carry a permanent label with the design pressures and the test standard, and that label is what an inspector, an insurer and a My Safe Florida Home evaluator want to see.
What makes the door hold is not the skin alone. It is the horizontal struts across each section, the heavy-gauge hinges, the reinforced end stiles and the jamb brackets that tie the track to the framing with the right fasteners into the right substrate, which on a concrete-block Port St. Lucie home means anchors into the block, not screws into the furring strip. The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety's field studies found that nine out of ten homes whose garage door survived had no structural roof damage, and that doors installed before about 2006 are rarely labeled at all. On the GDC-era streets that describes most of the doors on the block.
The money works in your favor. My Safe Florida Home, under section 215.5586 of the Florida Statutes, lists garage doors among the eligible opening-protection upgrades and matches two state dollars for every homeowner dollar up to $10,000, for site-built owner-occupied homes permitted before 2008 with an insured value under $700,000 and a program inspection within the last two years, subject to the year's funding. A rated door also shows up on a wind-mitigation report, which most insurers turn into a premium credit. The hurricane door guide walks through the label, the pressures and the grant step by step.
What the visit covers
Design pressure for your address
Positive and negative pressures worked out for the opening size, exposure and roof height under the 2023 Florida Building Code, and matched or exceeded by the door ordered.
Impact or wind-rated, your choice explained
The difference between a pressure-rated door and a debris-impact-rated door laid out plainly, with where the code requires which.
Struts, hinges and brackets to match
Horizontal struts on every section, heavy hinges, reinforced stiles and jamb brackets anchored into block, not furring.
The label and the approval
Florida Product Approval number and the design-pressure label on the door, photographed for your records and your insurer.
Grant and insurance paperwork
The product approval, the label photo and the permit assembled for a My Safe Florida Home claim and a wind-mitigation inspection.
Bracing kits for existing doors
Where a sound door simply lacks struts, an engineered reinforcement kit can be fitted, with a frank word about what it does and does not achieve.

Ranges are 2026 figures for St. Lucie and Martin counties, meant for budgeting. The number that counts is the one the technician writes at your house before any work begins, with parts and labor on separate lines. Quotes for new doors and openers are free and hold for 30 days.

Asked by homeowners here about impact and wind-rated doors
How do I know whether my current door is rated?
Open it and look along the inside edge of a section or on an end stile for a label with pressures in pounds per square foot and a test standard. No label, or a door older than about 2006 on an older home, usually means an unrated door.
Wind-rated or impact-rated: which do I need?
Everyone in our area needs at least a door rated to the design pressure for the opening. Inside the windborne-debris region, which takes in the coastal parts of St. Lucie and Martin counties, new doors need impact protection too. The installer confirms which applies to your address when working out the pressures.
Will the grant pay for it?
My Safe Florida Home lists garage doors as an eligible opening upgrade and matches two dollars for each of yours, up to $10,000, for homes that meet the program's rules and when the year's funding is open. It starts with a free program inspection, and we provide the product approval and label photos for the claim.
Can you just brace my existing door instead?
Sometimes. If the door is sound and the manufacturer has an approved reinforcement kit for it, struts and brackets can be added. It is not the same as a tested impact door, and we will say so, but it is a real improvement over an unbraced single-skin door.
Does an impact door look different?
Not from the street. The extra strength is in the gauge of the steel, the struts on the inside and the glass, if any. Styles and colors are the same as standard doors.
How long does an impact door take to arrive?
Two to six weeks, since most are built to the pressures for your opening. Order in the spring; the lead times stretch once a storm is on the map.
